Wrestler grapples with hearing problem

A deaf wrestler will appear in a television documentary this evening on how he is becoming a positive role model.

News - Deaf wrestler Sean Midnight

Sean Midnight, who has been deaf from birth and uses sign language to communicate, is one of the stars of Bedfordshire-based Power Trip Wrestling (PTW).

Youth worker Sean, 21, features on BSL Zone, a programme for Sky Digital’s ‘The Community Channel’ at 8pm.

The programme-makers were invited by PTW founder Peter Staniforth to attend a wrestling event at Houghton Regis Memorial Hall on March 14.

They filmed Sean’s match, and interviewed him for the programme.

Sean, one of the few deaf wrestlers in the industry, said: “That was a big opportunity for me to appear on their television programme, and one that I am very grateful for.

“Working for Power Trip Wrestling has been great for me, and lots of fun.

"It is the best promotion that I ever have worked for. I think this is because of the lovely Luton fans, and also because of Peter Staniforth who always given me the opportunity to be here, and to wrestle. Sadly, a lot of wrestling promotions won’t book me, and I believe that this happens because my deafness, and the communication issues. I do feel that they do discriminate against the deaf, or people with disabilities. “I would love to wrestle for as many wrestling promotions as I can, so that I can represent the deaf community positively, and deaf people in the UK in general.”
